Poor Diesel

During my post graduation days in Germany, I have heard that alternative fuel (fuel cell, battery) will be the future in automotive and industrial application and that it is the sector to invest as well as to work in. However, I had a different opinion, for two reasons.

First, the traditional (gas and diesel) engines along with oil extraction methods have been regularly optimized with large investments (upfront or later like in case of VW) to meet emissions levels as well as needs of price sensitive consumers. Given the availability of fossil fuel, technology and reasonable cost structure, there will be less motivation for the OEMs to change the gears and adapt alternative fuel. My favorite sentence used to be that car manufacturers’ will hang-in there with their diesel engines till the last drop is burnt, to leverage what is available.

Secondly, there used to be very less information how production and disposal of alternative fuel impact our environment. Still looking for information in layman’s terms.

However, disruptors like Tesla and its Giga factories, have forced the traditional automotive and engine OEMs to adapt alternative technologies and that too in a super fast modus.

On one hand I really hope that new trend of electrification and fuel cells has an positive impact our environment. On the other hand, I believe that there are several other factors which contribute towards environmental pollution and our greed is the initiator, hence it will be a shame and surprising if all OEMs give up on diesel, as long as it is available at current cost levels and there are technologies which makes it cleaner.

Food for thought regarding greed: We all can contribute to well being of our environment by consuming less……smaller cars, less packaging, not wasting food and water. Remember: No Pain – No Gain

Value of social interaction

During the weekend, as I was standing at a bakery with my family, I met an old gentleman whom I acquainted in the Church. He insisted and bought my wife and me a coffee and we shared our laugencroissant (type of croissant in Germany). Apart from feeding and playing with my little daughter, we spoke about several topics, including foreigners in Germany, his family, Indian food and his love for English language. No wonder he was proactively conversing in decent English (Most of the Germans can speak good English, however they are hesitant and prefer German to converse).

Before departing, he mentioned that current generation is busy with their own lives and have little time for anything around them and gave an example of his acquaintance who did not have time for a short talk, just before I joined him.

Fundamentally, we all agree that everyone needs social interactions in life to grow; unfortunately most of our interactions are subject to our personal goals and priorities. However I believe spending few minutes for others goals and priorities will do lot more to the society and add value to ourselves!

End of the day, I was happy that I could spend 15 minutes of my time with an aged man who was open and looking for social interaction.

Reflect to Correct

While growing up in India, I was passionate about solving problems; used to solve the mathematical problems in the news papers, repairedĀ air-coolers (used during Summers in India), fixed ceiling fans (kinda miss that in Germany), tried my hand on my dad’s scooter, disassembled stereo players & juicers and majority of the times put them back together to work.

Back in 1992, one rainy day, I fell off from my dad’s scooter and skin from my hands & legs were peeled off by the road – it was no fun under the rain. Then I was wondering why could’nt the scooters n bikes be covered to improve safety and avoid getting wet.

In the following years, I have had several ideas to solve problems common people are facing every day, be it lunch-box for Indian students in Western countries or a tuk-tuk calling service to help elderly Indians get their rides to their door step (in 2010 registered a domain Autobulao which means call a tuk-tuk) but was never courageous as I used to be as a kid to get out there and just do it.

I am sure there are several reasons for such a transition. Whatever those reasons are, now I am taking some to time to reflect and trying to bring back my instincts to just go for it. Maybe I can take some inspiration from my little daughter.

As I am breaking my shackles and writing my first blog, I dedicate this post to my daughter and my wifey!!
